What is Kusama

Kusama is often described as the wild cousin or the canary of Polkadot, a network that permits cross-chain transfers of various digital assets, not just tokens. Although it shares many parts of the code with Polkadot, its main goal is to work like a sandbox for blockchain developers, so this is much easier to scale, grow, and develop before these blockchains are released and become part of the Polkadot network.

How does Kusama work?

Developers can create two blockchains under Kusama: the relay chain that uses sharding to validate transactions to increase speed and proof-of-skate consensus and parachain, which is a custom blockchain powered by the relay chain’s computing ability, confirming the validity of every transaction. While building their blockchains, the members of the network can play different roles such as nominators and validators and then use real tokens to vote on governance referendum, validate the network, and stake the tokens for chosen validators, among others.

Just like Polkadot, Kusama (KSM) uses Proof of Stake. Fortunately, you don't have to set up a validator node yourself to earn a return on KSM tokens. In fact, you can stake Kusama easily and quickly on Coinmerce's platform. To do this, however, you'll need a Coinmerce account. About Kusama

It’s unclear when Kusama began as some sites say it was in 2016 while others claim it was launched in 2019. One thing is clear: it was founded by the same people behind Polkadot. Most notably, these are Robert Habermeier and Gavin Wood, who also co-founded the famous blockchain, Ethereum, and worked as its CTO. Wood also helped build a company in 2015 that now maintains Kusama’s native blockchain called Substrate, from which developers can build their parachains. Kusama’s token was one of the most popular in 2020 when its price rose to $70 at the end of the year after starting at no more than $2 in January. Its market capitalization in 2021, meanwhile, is almost $600 million.
