Substratum is a decentralized form of the internet. It is an open-source platform where everyone can use their computer network to make the worldwide internet more accessible. Or as they include it themselves; "Substratum is the foundation of the decentralized web ".
The founding team of Substratum originated from OverridePro , a 2004 web development company with experience in working with major brands that embrace technology. Substratum was founded by Justin Tabb , Abram Cookson and BJ Allmon .
Countries such as China, Iran and Russia block certain websites and content that they do not want the population to see. There are certain software programs where the user connects to an IP address of a server in another country. This means they can still access websites that have been blocked by the government. Software where you can use a different IP address are called VPNs (Virtual Private Network). Yet this is not an ideal solution. For example, people first have to download certain software. This is still a certain threshold for many users. Another problem is that governments also block the IP addresses that the VPNs use. Substratum solves this problem byallowing peers to host servers themselves, users can make use of them and thus do not suffer from censorship .
Substratum ICO was held in September 2017.
