How does Aave work?

Aave lenders deposit funds that are then placed into its liquidity or lending pools. When a user borrows, he has to provide a collateral higher than the amount he intends to borrow. The borrower then draws the funds from the lending pools. The lender decides if the tokens are to be transferred or traded.

About Aave

Aave traces its beginnings to 2017, when a student named Stani Kulechov and some developers created ETHLend. Kulechov’s goal was to build a platform that matched borrowers with lenders by posting loan offers and requests. ETHLend worked for a while. However, in 2018, it started having problems, mainly because of how difficult it often was to match loan offers. The group was also struggling with liquidity issues. This development led them to overhaul the project and not long after, Aave was born. ETHLend continued to operate as subsidiary of the new platform. There are two types of Aave tokens. aTokens are for lenders. It is utilized for collecting deposit interest. AAVE tokens, on the other hand, are the native Aave tokens. Users who use the AAVE for their loans are not charged with any fee. Aave is recognized as one of the most active Ethereum-based decentralized lending systems. Its deposits in mid-2020 totaled to approximately $158 million.
