Balancer is an AMM (automated market maker) on the Ethereum blockchain. The Balancer protocol functions as a price sensor and liquidity provider. By contributing to the liquidity pools, users can earn yield on their tokens.
The Balancer Protocol has three types of pools: private pools, where the pool owner is the sole provider of liquidity and can adjust all parameters; shared pools, open for anyone who wants to become a liquidity provider; and smart pools, which are similar to private pools but controlled by a smart contract, allowing anyone to provide liquidity.

Balancer Labs was founded by Fernando Martinelli and Mike McDonald and initially started as a research program within a software company in 2018. Balancer allows anyone to create a pool of tokens. Within the pool, all tokens remain balanced despite changes in prices. What makes Balancer unique is that you can add more than one token, and it is not necessary to have ETH. In Balancer, people can have more than eight assets per market, weighted by percentage. Additionally, you do not have to deposit 50% of the desired asset but can decide how much you want to deposit. Initially, Balancer did not have a native token, but in mid-2020, they introduced a governance token called BAL. This token incentivizes the use of liquidity pools and becoming a liquidity provider, thereby making the protocol more decentralized.
