Harmony is not the only blockchain that uses sharding. Zilliqa
is another blockchain that uses sharding to provide better scalability. However, Harmony finds that Zilliqa still has a problem: the tasks are distributed among the shards, but the blockchain is not distributed. Every node in Zilliqa's network still needs to own a full copy of the blockchain, which makes the blockchain slower. Therefore, Harmony has devised state sharding, where the blockchain is also distributed among the shards. Data can be synchronized faster as a result, allowing users to have their transactions processed even faster.
What can you use Harmony (ONE) for?
Harmony can be used to develop decentralized applications. This is because the blockchain provides support for smart contracts. These are digital contracts that software developers can use to write software, making it possible to run applications on Harmony's blockchain.
