Top 10 Memecoins 2025

Memecoins have surged in popularity over the past year. Many of these projects are launched based on a ‘meme‘—typically a funny image or a viral story. Most memecoins serve no functional purpose other than celebrating and popularizing the meme itself. The main goal is to create a sense of community, allowing people to become part of the meme culture. Every year, new memecoins emerge. Here are the ten biggest memecoins of 2025.

1. Dogecoin (DOGE)

The largest memecoin for years has been Dogecoin (DOGE). In late 2013, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created the cryptocurrency as a joke, arguing that the crypto industry took itself too seriously. The name originated as a tribute to a Japanese dog, a Shiba Inu named Kabosu, who became famous in 2010 due to an online photo posted by its owner. This is where the term ‘Doge‘ originated. Shortly after its launch, Dogecoin took off and even surpassed Bitcoin in trading volume. Today, it is widely used as an online tipping currency on social media platforms like Reddit. Dogecoin runs on Litecoin as an open-source cryptocurrency with the same proof-of-work mechanism. The same dog, Kabosu, remains the face of the coin. Sadly, Kabosu passed away in May 2024, but Dogecoin continues to thrive.

2. Shiba Inu (SHIB)

Since 2020, Shiba Inu (SHIB) has been one of the leading memecoins, named after the adorable Japanese dog breed. Shiba Inu was created by an anonymous founder known as Ryoshi, inspired by Dogecoin. The project, which positions itself as a "Dogecoin killer", focuses on building a vibrant and engaged community around the Shiba Inu breed. Unlike DOGE, SHIB has bigger ambitions. Users can use SHIB tokens for transactions within the ShibaSwap platform and for purchasing NFTs and other digital assets. It now offers a complete ecosystem with various applications. It operates on the Shibarium blockchain, a layer-2 blockchain built on Ethereum. The Shiba Inu ecosystem leverages smart contract technology to enable decentralized services and applications. While it started as a dog-themed memecoin, it has evolved into a community-driven ecosystem.

3. Pepe (PEPE)

Pepe Coin was introduced in April 2023 as the most ‘memeable‘ memecoin. Created by anonymous developers, it quickly entered the top 100 largest cryptocurrencies. The project gained immense popularity through social media, drawing significant attention. Its appeal stems from its connection to Pepe the Frog, a well-known internet meme. Pepe Coin is also unique due to its deflationary properties, meaning more coins are burned than created. This keeps scarcity high and encourages long-term holding. Additionally, there are no transaction fees. The founders aim to make it the biggest memecoin in the market.

4. Official Trump (TRUMP)

Launched in early 2025, Official Trump (TRUMP) quickly became one of the largest memecoins. It was introduced by Donald Trump himself via an obscure post on X, just days before his inauguration on January 20. The coin is said to embody Trump‘s values, including leadership and resilience. Within a day of its launch, its market capitalization skyrocketed to $4.8 billion. As with all of Trump‘s ventures, his goal is to make Official Trump the biggest memecoin. The coin operates within the Solana ecosystem, benefiting from its scalability and low transaction costs. TRUMP is primarily about fostering a sense of community and being part of a historical moment.

5. Bonk (BONK)

Bonk (BONK) is another memecoin based on the Shiba Inu breed. Launched on Christmas 2022, it was the first memecoin on Solana, aiming to revitalize the network. Bonk seeks to restore liquidity to Solana‘s decentralized exchanges. To become the largest community coin, BONK focuses on three pillars: multichain expansion, DeFi, and gaming. The coin is usable beyond the Solana blockchain, and developers aim to integrate BONK into various gaming platforms. BONK is already accepted for NFT purchases and staking on multiple Solana projects. It is not only about entertainment but also provides a platform for users to engage in activities such as giveaways and competitions.

6. FLOKI (FLOKI)

The fourth Shiba Inu-themed memecoin on this list, FLOKI, is named after Elon Musk‘s dog. Musk has repeatedly expressed his admiration for Dogecoin. When he announced that he had adopted a Shiba Inu named Floki, a new memecoin was born. Floki‘s name is inspired by Floki the Viking, giving the coin its signature logo of a Shiba Inu wearing a Viking helmet. Floki Inu differentiates itself by blending memes with real-world utility. The founders aim to build an ecosystem with strategic partnerships and actual use cases for the token. Plans include an NFT marketplace, educational platforms, and a metaverse project called Valhalla.

7. SPX6900 (SPX)

SPX6900 emerged in 2024 as a parody of the S&P 500 stock index, with the joke being that 6900 is a larger number than 500, making SPX6900 ‘better.‘ This memecoin has no inherent function beyond attempting to surpass the S&P 500‘s market capitalization of over $45 billion. However, it offers an NFT collection called Project AEON, featuring 3,333 mystical entities known as Aeons. These NFTs aim to attract a dedicated community. SPX6900 has some unique features, such as full decentralization and availability on Ethereum, Solana, and Base. It uses a Proof of Burn mechanism, increasing scarcity by burning large numbers of tokens. Despite these elements, SPX6900 remains primarily a joke coin with no serious function.

8. dogwifhat (WIF)

Dogwifhat is yet another Shiba Inu-based memecoin, but with a twist—this one features a dog wearing a hat. This hat has become the defining characteristic of the coin, symbolizing progress, innovation, and pushing boundaries—or, as some say, simply a cute dog with a hat. While the coin itself has no real function beyond fostering a sense of community, the project has ambitions. Dogwifhat aims to create a fun and engaged community for sharing memes while also supporting charitable causes, particularly those related to animal welfare. It is the ultimate memecoin for dog lovers, both digital and real-world, celebrating the undeniable cuteness of dogs—especially those wearing hats.

9. Pudgy Penguins (PENGU)

Breaking away from the dog theme, Pudgy Penguins is a project featuring 8,888 unique NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. Each NFT represents an adorable penguin with distinct traits. What makes the Pudgy Penguins project unique is that the characters exist not just digitally but also as physical toys. The goal is to bridge the gap between digital assets and tangible products. Initially launched in July 2021, all NFTs sold out within 20 minutes. The Pudgy Penguins coin allows fans and newcomers to participate in "The Huddle," the growing community of Pudgy Penguins. PENGU aims to foster a positive community, encouraging people to believe in their own potential.

10. Brett (Based) (BRETT)

Brett is the best friend of Pepe. Both characters originate from *Boys Club*, a famous comic by Matt Furie. Brett loves dancing and video games and serves as the mascot for the Base Chain, an ecosystem supporting numerous applications and projects. BRETT stands out with a unique feature: the creators have relinquished control over the contract and eliminated the mint function. This gives full authority to the community, preventing the creators from issuing new tokens or altering the contract. As Base continues to grow, Brett is expected to play an increasingly important role.
