Serum is a decentralized crypto exchange (DEX) running on Solana's blockchain. A decentralized crypto exchange is a place where you can buy cryptocurrencies, just like you can at Coinmerce. The difference between a DEX and an exchange like Coinmerce, is that the DEX runs as an application on the blockchain. This therefore makes the DEX decentralized.

How does Serum work?

SRM is Serum's cryptocurrency. This is a token that runs on Solana's blockchain, just as Serum's application does. SRM's token standard is called SPL. A token standard is nothing less than a set of rules that a token must adhere to in order to work within an ecosystem. For example, one of those rules is that the token must be developed in a particular programming language. If it is not, it cannot be seen as a full-fledged token by other protocols and applications. All tokens running on Solana must conform to the SPL token standard.

About Serum

Serum is an open-source project created by a group of multiple partners, including FTX, Alameda Research and the Solana Foundation. Currently, development is primarily supported by the Serum Foundation, which consists of a group of experts in cryptocurrency, trading and decentralized finance. The SRM token is used as a governance token, allowing users to vote and get discounts on protocol fees. You can also stake SRM to receive rewards on it.
