What is Bancor

Bancor is a decentralized cross-chain cryptocurrency conversion network that allows users to convert their crypto tokens into EOS, Ethereum, and other tokens without a counterparty or middleman to help carry out the exchange. The network utilizes smart contracts, which are not only essential for efficient conversion flow but also help facilitate access to liquidity pools responsible for connecting tokens within the Bancor network.

How does Bancor work?

Within the Bancor network, you will find tokens of every kind that use the Bancor Protocol, and they are all connected because of the network’s hub token, the BNT or Bancor Network Token that is responsible for converting tokens. Any ERC-20 compatible token can be converted through the protocol, and every token is connected to smart contracts that have ERC-20 tokens held as reserves.

About Bancor

The name Bancor traces its history back to the 1940s, when economist John Maynard Keynes’ International Clearing Union (ICU) came up with the Bancor supranational currency. In 2017, Guy Benartzi, Galia Benartzi, and Eyal Hertzog developed the Bancor protocol in Israel. They chose the name Bancor in honor of Keynes. Its Initial Coin Offering or ICO was held that same year, and Bancor successfully collected more than 396,000 Ether, which totaled to around $153 million. Aside from the Bancor network and Bancor protocol, there’s also The Bancor Foundation, which is responsible for providing developers and all those who use the protocol to build applications with technical support and the grants they need. Bancor’s success is dependent on three factors: Bancor’s native token BNT, non-costly trades that do not need another party or exchange, and its support for both EOS and Ethereum tokens.
