What is Qtum

Two things stand out about Qtum – it is a cryptocurrency and a business-facing platform, and it is intended for all types of businesses performing a variety of tasks. Pronounced “quantum”, the platform combines the best qualities of Bitcoin and Ethereum, the world’s biggest cryptocurrencies; and it gives users the option to create huge-scale dapps and smart contracts.

About Qtum

Neil Mahi, Jordan Earls, and Patrick Dai developed Qtum in Singapore. Dai and Mahi have had years of significant industry experience before they partnered with Earls; Dai was with Alibaba while Mahi already had 20 years of software development experience. In September 2017, the cryptocurrency platform went live. The permissionless, open blockchain network integrated Ethereum’s programmability (i.e. the Ethereum Virtual Machine or EVM) with Bitcoin’s major security and stability features and uses the UTXO model. Qtum uses the Bitcoin UTXO model as basis for its base layer and another layer functions like how the EVM or Ethereum Virtual Machine does. Qtum’s initial coin offering was in 2017. It had 100 million QTUM units and around 51% of such was sold. They were able to raise around $15 million. The remaining amount of QTUM was divided and distributed to the founding team, investors, and kept for business development purposes.
