Arbitrum is a layer-2 scalability solution for Ethereum. This way it can take advantage of Ethereum's security and compatibility, while also offering lower costs and faster transaction processing because of the higher throughput.
MoreArbitrum works with optimistic rollups, which is a scalability solution for the blockchain. The rollups process transactions outside the blockchain, then put everything back on the blockchain at once. Arbitrum's native token is ARB and is used as a governance token.

Arbitrum was developed by Offchain Labs of New York. Its founders are Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner, all of whom are researchers at Princeton University with years of experience in computer science, cryptography and blockchain. Ed Felten is the co-founder and Chief Scientist at Offchain Labs. He has worked as the Deputy CTO for President Obama. Steven Goldveder and Harry Kalodner are both computer scientists and co-founders of Offchain Labs, with Goldveder being named CEO and Kalodner CTO. The founders have ambitious plans for Arbitrum: they would like to release a layer-3 solution called Orbit, where programmers can write their code in languages such as C++ and Rust. The first ARB tokens were launched via airdrop in March 2023. The governance token can be used to participate in decisions and proposals made for the system.
