Cartesi is a decentralized, layer-2 infrastructure for blockchains that makes it possible for developers to use Linux VM for coding scalable smart contracts, outside the blockchain. One of its goals is to offer developers and decentralized apps users mainstream convenience and scalability.
MoreCartesi uses two different infrastructures in solving the problems of expensive fees and scalability issues on blockchains: Descartes Rollups and Noether. The Descartes Rollups is an optimistic rollup variant, while Noether is a sidechain that provides apps with data availability; and when combined, these two allow Cartesi-based applications to scale through off-chain and on-chain components.

Cartesi founders Erick de Moura, Colin Steil, Diego Nehab, and Augusto Teixeira initially joined the blockchain industry because of the friendship between Teixeira and IOTA founder Serguei Popov. Teixeira’s first idea, however, was to come up with a trustless Artificial Intelligence marketplace catering to data scientists. This eventually evolved into the platform’s current focus – building a Linux runtime environment supportive Layer-2 scaling infrastructure. Current CEO de Moura specializes in process definition, execution, and software architecture. His experience in the software industry spans more or less 20 years, serving various designations in infrastructure, fintech, e-commerce, and healthtech. Cartesi COO Steil is an expert in community and business operations. He used to be a startup founder and venture capitalist specializing in the Asian ecosystem. His initial involvement in blockchain technology was in 2017. Teixeira, Cartesi’s Chief Scientific Officer, has a postdoc from the Ecole Normale Superieure of Paris and a Ph.D. awarded by ETH-Zurich. His field of expertise is crypto-economics.
