Florida woman sues Google over Play Store crypto scam

A woman from Florida has filed a lawsuit against tech giant Google, claiming that the company's negligence led to a loss of more than $5 million for her.

In the lawsuit filed in the state of California, the woman explains that she was misled by a crypto-investment app called Yobit Pro, which she purchased from the Google Play Store.

From February to July 2023, the woman invested approximately $4.6 million in the cryptocurrency platform Yobit Pro. She states that the app initially showed impressive growth of her investments to $7 million.

However, problems arose when the woman was informed that she needed to make an additional deposit of $500,000 to cover "taxes" when she tried to withdraw her profits. When the app requested another $2 million, she became suspicious and rejected the request.

The woman's distress heightened when she began receiving threatening messages on WhatsApp from unknown cybercriminals, demanding more money and issuing life threats. Recognizing the severity of the situation, she reported the scam to law enforcement and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which subsequently alerted Google.

Despite the urgency of the situation, the lawsuit claims that Google took about three months to remove the app from its Play Store.

The woman is currently seeking a minimum of $5 million in damages from Google for her financial losses. Her lawsuit emphasizes her trust in the app because it was hosted on the Google Play Store, under the impression that the platform was secure and free from fraudulent applications.

Google is accused of projecting "material misrepresentations and other deceptive conduct" in this case. The woman claims that this misrepresentation led to significant financial, emotional, and psychological damages.
