What is Synthetix

Synthetix is an Ethereum-based protocol that allows users to trade or issue synthetic assets, which are assets that obtain the value of similar assets without actually physically owning them. This means that investors now have the option to widen their investment portfolio by tapping into synthetic commodities like gold and silver, synthetic fiat currencies, and synthetic cryptocurrencies without their asset equivalent on hand.

How does Synthetix work?

Synthetix uses a smart contract known as synth, in which its purpose is to monitor and give returns on the traded synthetic assets, and an important part of the synth to do its job is the decentralized oracle, which are smart-contract-based protocols that keep track of the prices of the assets in the market, so users can exchange them as if they have these assets for safekeeping or storage. Meanwhile, the tokens work as collateral, thereby protecting these assets from possible market volatility or fluctuations and improving these assets’ liquidity.

About Synthetix

The Australian-based Synthetix was officially launched in 2017 by Kain Warwick, also its CEO and founder, who used to work in a cryptocurrency payment company in the country. Synthetix used to be called Havven, and it’s the name used when it had an initial coin offering in 2018 where the company offered 100 million tokens and raised around $30 million. The renaming occurred as the company developed and then issued 250 million tokens. Currently, the plan is to increase the token offer over the years. In March 2021, it released 212.5 million tokens. By the following year, it will reach over 230 million.
